dormakaba RB111 Adjustable Roller Bolt – Satin Chrome

The dormakaba RB111 is a fully adjustable roller bolt designed to act as the secondary latching device on commercial and residential doors. The roller is manufactured from stainless steel and the housing is finished in satin chrome. The strike position is adjustable to accommodate varying door-to-frame gaps, making it compatible with both timber and aluminium door and frame combinations.

The RB111 is fire rated to AS1530 Part 4 as a secondary latching device. This certification means it has been tested as the secondary latch component in a fire door assembly, working alongside a fire-rated primary lock. It is not a primary locking device and does not operate independently as a security lock.

Fire Rated – AS1530 Part 4 – Secondary Latching Device Only
The RB111 is fire rated in accordance with AS1530 Part 4. This certification applies specifically to its use as a secondary latching device only. The RB111 is not a primary lock and must always be used alongside a separately fire-rated primary mortice lock in any fire door assembly. It does not satisfy the primary lock requirement of a fire-rated doorset on its own.

Key Features

  • Fully adjustable strike position to suit varying door-to-frame gaps.
  • Stainless steel roller for long-term mechanical durability.
  • Satin chrome faceplate and housing finish.
  • Stainless steel strike plate included.
  • Suits timber and aluminium doors and frames.
  • Fire rated to AS1530 Part 4 as a secondary latching device.
  • Compact profile — 87mm length, 25mm width, 40mm depth.

Suitable Uses

  • Secondary latching device on fire-rated door assemblies where a primary fire-rated lock is also installed
  • Timber and aluminium commercial doors requiring a supplementary catch
  • Doors where the door gap varies and a fixed-strike roller bolt would not engage reliably

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "fire rated as a secondary latching device only" mean?

A fire door assembly requires both a primary lock and a secondary latch. The RB111 has been tested to AS1530 Part 4 in the secondary latch role — meaning it holds the door closed during a fire event alongside a separately certified primary lock. The "secondary latching device only" qualification means the RB111 cannot be used as the sole latching or locking device on a fire door. A fire-rated primary mortice lock, such as the dormakaba MS2602, must also be installed and independently fire rated. For a full explanation of secondary lock rules on fire doors, see our article on secondary locks on fire-rated doors.

How does the adjustment work?

The strike plate fixing slots are elongated, allowing it to be positioned closer to or further from the door edge to suit the door-to-frame gap on site. This matters because if the gap is too wide, the roller will not compress and engage the strike correctly; if it is too narrow, the door will not close fully. The adjustment is made during installation by positioning the strike at the correct depth before fixing.

Does this roller bolt provide any security against forced entry?

No. A roller bolt is a passive spring-loaded catch — it holds the door in the closed position by the tension of the spring against the strike, but it provides no resistance against someone deliberately pushing or pulling the door open. It should always be installed alongside a key-operated primary lock on any door that requires security.

Can this be installed on aluminium door frames?

Yes. The RB111 is confirmed suitable for both timber and aluminium doors and frames. For aluminium frames, use appropriate self-tapping screws rated for the frame material. If in doubt, consult your frame manufacturer or a licensed installer for fixing recommendations.

Is this roller bolt compatible with smart lock installations on fire doors?

Yes, provided both the smart lock and the RB111 are independently fire rated and the overall door assembly is certified. The RB111 is commonly paired with fire-rated smart lock installations where the smart lock provides the primary locking function and the RB111 provides the secondary latching function required by the fire door assembly. Note that adding any additional hardware to a certified fire door may affect the door's fire certification — confirm with your fire door specialist before installation.

Additional Information

Secondary Latching Device — Fire Door Specification:
On certified fire doors, the one-penetration principle generally permits only one lock body penetration per fire test certification. Adding a secondary device outside the terms of the certified doorset may affect compliance. Before installing the RB111 on an existing fire door, confirm with the door manufacturer or a fire door specialist that adding a secondary latch does not void the door's fire certification. Our article on secondary locks on fire-rated doors covers the one-penetration rule and what is and is not permitted on certified fire door assemblies.
Roller Bolt vs Deadlatch — Choosing the Right Secondary Device:
A roller bolt holds the door closed by spring pressure alone — the roller compresses as the door closes and springs into the strike. It provides no dead-locking action. A deadlatch, by contrast, provides an automatic deadlocking latch bolt that resists back-pressure. For external doors or doors where any level of forced-entry resistance is required, a deadlatch is the appropriate secondary device rather than a roller bolt. The RB111 is suited to internal doors, controlled-access commercial doors, and fire door assemblies where the primary lock provides the security function.
Fire Rating Standards and Certification:
The RB111's certification is to AS1530 Part 4, which is the Australian standard for fire resistance testing of building elements. For a plain-English guide to how fire rating standards work and what AS1530 Part 4 means in practice, see Chapter 11 — Australian Smart Lock Standards in our buyer's guide. To verify the current fire test certification for this product, see our fire rating certificates reference page.
