ASSA ABLOY SMARTair i-max Standalone Electronic Escutcheon – HID iCLASS Standard Mortice DDA Handle with Key Override

The ASSA ABLOY SMARTair i-max electronic escutcheon is a wireless access control device designed to convert conventional mortice lock doors into secure RFID credential-controlled access points. This model (SNAB43SL2V648DI) integrates a HID iCLASS contactless credential reader, a DDA compliant lever handle, and a mechanical key override within a standalone electronic escutcheon designed for standard mortice lock installations.

SMARTair escutcheons are battery powered and require no wiring through the door. They mount directly onto existing doors fitted with compatible mortice locks, allowing traditional keyed doors to be upgraded to electronic access control with minimal installation work. The electronics and battery pack are located on the internal escutcheon for improved durability and tamper resistance.

The device forms part of the broader SMARTair wireless access control platform. The ecosystem includes wall readers, electronic cylinders, padlocks, cabinet locks and management software that together create scalable building access systems. The overall architecture is described in the SMARTair Wireless Access Control Overview and the SMARTair System Architecture Guide.

Typical applications include offices, meeting rooms, laboratories, education facilities and healthcare environments where credential-based door control is required without installing wired access control infrastructure.

SMARTair System Architecture

The ASSA ABLOY SMARTair platform is a modular wireless access control system designed to scale from simple standalone doors to fully networked building security. The same hardware can operate under several different management architectures depending on the software license and communication modules installed.

System Type Management Method Typical Use
Standalone Programming cards manage users directly at the door. Small offices, plant rooms, staff areas.
Update-on-Card Access rights updated via user RFID credentials passing through online update points. Medium-sized buildings with periodic updates.
Wireless Online Real-time communication between door devices and server via wireless hubs. Large commercial buildings requiring live monitoring.
Openow Mobile Access Smartphone credentials issued through the Openow mobile platform. Sites requiring mobile credentials and remote key management.

SMARTair hardware is designed to be upgradeable. A door initially installed as a standalone system can later be upgraded to Update-on-Card, Wireless Online or Openow mobile access without replacing the door hardware.

For a full explanation of system architecture and upgrade paths refer to the SMARTair System Information Guide or the SMARTair Wireless Access Control Overview.

Power Supply and Battery System

  • Powered by 3 × AAA LR03 alkaline batteries.
  • Battery life typically 75,000 – 105,000 cycles.
  • Standby life up to 2 years.
  • Low battery LED warning indicators.
  • Mechanical override cylinder allows entry if batteries are depleted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this SMARTair escutcheon require wiring through the door?
No. The SMARTair i-max escutcheon is fully battery powered and designed for wireless installation. It mounts directly onto doors fitted with compatible standard mortice locks without running cables through the door or frame.

Does this model include a keypad?
No. The SNAB43SL2V648DI model uses RFID credential authentication only. Keypad authentication is available on other SMARTair escutcheon models such as the 47-series keypad versions.

Can the escutcheon be upgraded to a networked SMARTair system?
Yes. SMARTair devices are designed to be scalable. Although this model operates in standalone mode, installations can typically be upgraded to Update-on-Card or Wireless Online architectures with the appropriate system hardware and software.

What happens if the batteries become depleted?
The escutcheon provides LED warnings when battery levels are low. If the batteries become completely depleted, the door can still be opened using the mechanical key override cylinder.

Can this model be installed on existing commercial doors?
Yes. SMARTair escutcheons are specifically designed for retrofit installations and can upgrade existing mechanical lock doors to electronic access control without replacing the mortice lock body.

Additional Information

Standalone Access Control Operation
This model operates as a standalone electronic escutcheon. Users and access permissions are programmed directly at the door using SMARTair programming cards, making it suitable for individual secure doors or small installations where centralised access management is not required.

Standard Mortice Lock Compatibility
The SNAB43SL2V648DI version is designed for doors fitted with standard mortice locks commonly used in commercial timber and steel door installations. The escutcheon controls the handle operation through an internal electromechanical clutch connected to the lock spindle.

Mechanical Security Provided by the Lock Body
SMARTair escutcheons do not replace the mechanical mortice lock. The lock body continues to provide the primary mechanical security and latch mechanism while the escutcheon electronically controls handle operation.

Ideal for Commercial Retrofit Projects
Because the electronics are contained within the escutcheon assembly and powered by internal batteries, SMARTair escutcheons are widely used to upgrade keyed doors to electronic access control without running cables through the door.

Part of the SMARTair Ecosystem
SMARTair devices are part of a modular wireless access control platform that includes electronic cylinders, wall readers, cabinet locks, padlocks and mobile credentials. Installations can expand over time as building access control requirements increase.

Compatible Mortice Locks for SMARTair Escutcheons

SMARTair electronic escutcheons are designed to operate with commercial mortice lock bodies. The escutcheon controls the door handle through an electromechanical clutch and split spindle system, which requires the internal spindle and lockcase geometry of a mortice lock.

Tubular latches are not suitable for SMARTair escutcheons because they do not provide the required spindle control or structural lockcase needed for electronic clutch operation.

For reliable installation and long-term durability, SMARTair escutcheons are commonly installed with the following commercial mortice locks:

Choosing the correct mortice lock ensures that the SMARTair escutcheon can reliably control the door handle, maintain proper latch engagement, and meet the mechanical durability requirements expected in commercial access control environments.
