ASSA ABLOY SMARTair i-max Update-On-Card Electronic Escutcheon – HID iCLASS Keypad Narrow Mortice DDA Handle with Key Override

The ASSA ABLOY SMARTair i-max electronic escutcheon is a professional wireless access control device designed for commercial environments requiring secure credential-based access without running cables through doors. This model (SNCB47SL2V908DI) supports Update-On-Card (UOC) system architecture and combines a HID iCLASS RFID reader, PIN keypad authentication, and a DDA compliant lever handle with mechanical key override.

The SMARTair escutcheon installs directly onto doors fitted with compatible narrow mortice locks, making it ideal for retrofit upgrades from mechanical keys to electronic access control. Because the electronics and batteries are contained within the escutcheon assembly, installation does not require wiring through the door or frame.

SMARTair is a modular wireless access control platform that includes escutcheons, wall readers, electronic cylinders, cabinet locks and mobile credential technologies. An overview of the ecosystem can be found in the SMARTair Wireless Access Control Overview and the SMARTair System Information Guide.

Typical installations include offices, laboratories, meeting rooms, healthcare facilities and education buildings where access permissions must be centrally managed while maintaining simple installation.

SMARTair System Architecture

The ASSA ABLOY SMARTair platform is a modular wireless access control system designed to scale from simple standalone doors to fully networked building security. The same hardware can operate under several different management architectures depending on the software license and communication modules installed.

System Type Management Method Typical Use
Standalone Programming cards manage users directly at the door. Small offices, plant rooms, staff areas.
Update-on-Card Access rights updated via user RFID credentials passing through online update points. Medium-sized buildings with periodic updates.
Wireless Online Real-time communication between door devices and server via wireless hubs. Large commercial buildings requiring live monitoring.
Openow Mobile Access Smartphone credentials issued through the Openow mobile platform. Sites requiring mobile credentials and remote key management.

SMARTair hardware is designed to be upgradeable. A door initially installed as a standalone system can later be upgraded to Update-on-Card, Wireless Online or Openow mobile access without replacing the door hardware.

For a full explanation of system architecture and upgrade paths refer to the SMARTair System Information Guide or the SMARTair Wireless Access Control Overview.

Power Supply and Battery System

  • Powered by 3 × AAA LR03 alkaline batteries.
  • Typical battery life: 75,000 – 105,000 cycles.
  • Standby life up to 2 years.
  • Low battery warning via LED indicator.
  • Mechanical key override cylinder provides emergency entry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Update-On-Card (UOC) mean?
Update-On-Card systems allow access permissions to be updated using RFID credentials. When a user presents their credential at an update point, the card receives updated permissions which are then applied to door locks when the card is presented.

Does this escutcheon require wiring through the door?
No. SMARTair i-max escutcheons are battery powered and designed for wireless installation. The device mounts directly onto doors fitted with compatible mortice locks without requiring door cabling.

Can both RFID cards and PIN codes be used?
Yes. This keypad model supports multiple authentication configurations including RFID card only, PIN only, Card + PIN and PIN + Card sequential authentication.

What happens if the batteries go flat?
Low battery warnings are indicated via LED signals on the escutcheon. If batteries become fully depleted, the door can still be opened using the mechanical key override cylinder.

Can this lock be installed on existing doors?
Yes. SMARTair escutcheons are designed for retrofit installations and can upgrade existing mechanical lock doors to electronic access control without replacing the mortice lock body.

Additional Information

Update-On-Card Access Control
The SNCB47SL2V908DI model is designed for SMARTair Update-On-Card systems. In this architecture, user credentials receive access updates when presented at a connected update point, allowing permissions to be distributed without requiring live communication to every door.

Narrow Mortice Lock Compatibility
This model is designed for doors fitted with narrow mortice locks commonly used in aluminium framed commercial doors and shopfront installations. The escutcheon controls the handle through an electromechanical clutch connected to the lock spindle.

Mechanical Security Provided by the Lock Body
SMARTair escutcheons do not replace the mechanical mortice lock. The lock body continues to provide the primary latch and deadlocking mechanism while the escutcheon electronically controls handle access.

Retrofit Access Control Upgrades
Because SMARTair escutcheons contain all electronics and batteries within the escutcheon assembly, existing doors can often be upgraded from mechanical keys to electronic access control without major structural modifications.

Part of the SMARTair Ecosystem
SMARTair forms a modular wireless access control platform including electronic cylinders, wall readers, cabinet locks, padlocks, credential encoders and mobile credential solutions. Installations can grow and evolve as building security requirements increase.

Compatible Mortice Locks for SMARTair Escutcheons

SMARTair electronic escutcheons are designed to operate with commercial mortice lock bodies. The escutcheon controls the door handle through an electromechanical clutch and split spindle system, which requires the internal spindle and lockcase geometry of a mortice lock.

Tubular latches are not suitable for SMARTair escutcheons because they do not provide the required spindle control or structural lockcase needed for electronic clutch operation.

For reliable installation and long-term durability, SMARTair escutcheons are commonly installed with the following commercial mortice locks:

Choosing the correct mortice lock ensures that the SMARTair escutcheon can reliably control the door handle, maintain proper latch engagement, and meet the mechanical durability requirements expected in commercial access control environments.
